David Gregory

About David Gregory

David has lived in Leicestershire all his life and has spent the last forty years living in the village of Glenfield, which is about five miles from Desford, where is ancestors farmed 500 years ago. Before beginning his family’s history, David knew nothing about their roots in Peckleton and Desford. An even bigger surprise was that his great-grandmother’s family had been farmers in Glenfield for centuries, farming the land where he now lives. The second book of the series, which David is already writing is about his great-grandmother’s family in Glenfield

Henry Gregory 1834-1919

In 1856, Henry was 22 years old at the time of his marriage. His wife, Catherine Meadows, was about 14 and already pregnant with their first child. This situation may well appal those reading it today. There is reason to believe that marrying a girl of fourteen was considered unacceptable even in 1856. On their marriage certificate, Catherine overstated her age as 17, clearly disguising her true age. The law allowed girls to be married at 12 years. Legally, Henry and Catherine had not broken any law. Still, despite the legality of the situation, there seems to be no other explanation for the [...]

The recorded details of Mary’s life outline a stark existence marked by a series of tragedies. During the early nineteenth century, having a child out of wedlock was largely regarded as a failure on the mother’s part. An illegitimate child branded its mother as morally corrupt. In England, the 1834 Poor Law “reform” incorporated a Bastardy Clause that freed fathers from parental obligations, supposedly discouraging women from falling pregnant to secure financial aid. Mary conceived four times out of wedlock, and only once was she married while pregnant. We can only imagine the local reaction to the ongoing scandal surrounding her life in [...]

Rychard Gregorye 1534-1593

No record of Rychard Gregorye’s birth has survived; therefore, I have estimated his birth year to be 25 years prior to his recorded marriage in 1559. This calculation suggests that his birth year would be around 1534, aligning Rychard’s birthdate broadly with that of the future Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603), the last of the five Tudor monarchs.
